The aim of this paper is twofold: 1) to evaluate the spread of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to support teaching in the classroom; 2) to explore the relationship between the use of these technologies and the academic performance of the Italian students. Using data from National Institute for the Evaluation of the Education and Training System (INVALSI), we first built a synthetic index of ICT usage and then we explored its relationship with the scholastic performance of students, through OLS and quantile regression models. The results of this work offer an opportunity to reflect both on the actual degree of dissemination of ICT in teaching practice and on the potential of these tools to improve student results.
