The paper presents the results of experimental monotonic Single Shear Tests (SST) on concrete prisms reinforced with different types of FRP systems: externally bonded carbon (EBR) plates and carbon, basalt and glass bars according to the NSM technique. The experimental tests involved concrete specimens characterized by a low value of compressive strength in order to simulate the bonding behaviour of FRP reinforcement for strengthening of existing RC structures. The mechanical properties of concrete, plates, and bars have been evaluated through experimental tests on at least 3 equal specimens. Several strain gauges have been applied on plates and bars to evaluate experimental local deformation. The performances of each reinforcement system are discussed and compared in details in terms of failure mode, load-slip relationship, strain and shear stress distribution. A comparison between the effectiveness of EBR and NSM systems is also discussed in the paper. Furthermore, the reliability of theoretical expressions provided by national and international codes as well as literature expressions has been evaluated with reference to FRP laminates.
