In this study, a wide experimental program conducted by the Authors, within the activities of the research project PROVACI, is presented. The complete experimental program concerns diagonal compression tests carried out on a total of 50 unstrengthened and strengthened masonry walls made of both tuff blocks and clay bricks. The strengthening techniques employed include different innovative composite grids embedded in different types of inorganic matrices. Compression-diagonal tests are carried out under monotonic loads. The experimental results have revealed that the different strengthening options have an influence on both shear strength and ductility. In particular, the stiffness and amount of the reinforcing grid along with physical and geometrical properties of the plaster layer (i.e. matrix composition and thickness) yield different shear behavior. In particular, the major role of the matrix in the effectiveness of the corresponding strengthening technique has been highlighted.
