The issue of the so-called environmental sustainability of maritime transport has recently raised great attention, with particular regard to large ships dimensions, of participants of the sector and scholars. The profile currently at the center of a considerable interest by the international legislator and community is the air pollution. Most recent measures taken by the IMO and the EU provide for the establishment of a monitoring, communication and verification system of CO2 emissions and gradual reduction of the amounts of sulphur contained in the exhaust gas discharged by the ships. Furthermore the legislator, aiming at reducing emissions, encourages member states to adopt alternative systems including electricity produced onshore and LNG.

Abstract
The issue of the so-called environmental sustainability of maritime transport has recently raised great attention, with particular regard to large ships dimensions, of participants of the sector and scholars. The profile currently at the center of a considerable interest by the international legislator and community is the air pollution. Most recent measures taken by the IMO and the EU provide for the establishment of a monitoring, communication and verification system of CO2 emissions and gradual reduction of the amounts of sulphur contained in the exhaust gas discharged by the ships. Furthermore the legislator, aiming at reducing emissions, encourages member states to adopt alternative systems including electricity produced onshore and LNG.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
