In this study the spatial resolution of microwave data collected by the AMSR-E radiometer is enhanced to evaluate wind speed on a spatial grid finer than the conventional one. The spatial resolution problem is addressed in both Hilbert and Banach spaces and experiments are undertaken on actual data collected over the North Sea. Results show that the spatial resolution of the 6.9 GHz channel can be improved to approximately meet the 10.7 GHz one and, hence, this allows estimating wind speed using a finer resolution grid.

Abstract

In this study the spatial resolution of microwave data collected by the AMSR-E radiometer is enhanced to evaluate wind speed on a spatial grid finer than the conventional one. The spatial resolution problem is addressed in both Hilbert and Banach spaces and experiments are undertaken on actual data collected over the North Sea. Results show that the spatial resolution of the 6.9 GHz channel can be improved to approximately meet the 10.7 GHz one and, hence, this allows estimating wind speed using a finer resolution grid.
