A number of comprehensive contributions have been published on kinematic effects induced by earthquake motions and, at present, a few simplified methods are available for a first evaluation of the kinematic bending moment at the interface between two consecutive layers and at the pile head, including the very recent methods suggested by Maiorano et al. (2009) and de Sanctis et al. (2010). The paper reports an application of these recent methods to earthquake events selected from the European strong motions database ESM. It is found that the prediction capability of the above procedures is fully satisfactory.

Abstract

A number of comprehensive contributions have been published on kinematic effects induced by earthquake motions and, at present, a few simplified methods are available for a first evaluation of the kinematic bending moment at the interface between two consecutive layers and at the pile head, including the very recent methods suggested by Maiorano et al. (2009) and de Sanctis et al. (2010). The paper reports an application of these recent methods to earthquake events selected from the European strong motions database ESM. It is found that the prediction capability of the above procedures is fully satisfactory.
