Parliaments are seeking legitimacy as open, accountable and sustainable institutions engaging citizens in the policy processes through Internet technologies. Social sustainability relies on citizens’ participation and knowledge emerging through interaction by new technologies leading representative institutions to become participatory, accessible and responsive to the people. Parliaments as information and knowledge based organizations may follow a different path for sustainability engaging citizen from information provision to active citizenship and participation, structuring the e-parliament along a continuum between improving processes and connecting with people.
