This report is devoted to the role that the subsoil of Napoli has had in the development of the city. The topic is considered mainly from the geotechnical point of view, also if geological, structural, architectural and historical points of view are dealt too. First the geological peculiarities of the ground of Napoli, located between two active volcanic districts, are described. A short synthesis of the mechanical behaviour of the soils and rocks of the subsoil of Napoli is presented. The report ends with the main part dedicated to the effect of the subsoil on the historical development of the city through the centuries and on the geotechnical problems of Napoli at present time.
