This paper addresses to analyze methodological aspects concerning the use of GIS to select better sites for wind turbines. After the resume of theoretical fundamentals on conversion of wind energy into useful form, such as electricity, a case study concerning the Italian area of “Provincia di Foggia“ is proposed. Starting up from anemometrical data acquired at the Italian Air Force station in Amendola and relative to period 1996-2005, taking in account morphology obtained from DTM, map about the territorial variability of the wind is derived. Using Map Algebra, compatible sites for the realization of wind turbines are defined in relation to wind characteristics as well as limits concerning morphology and safety.
