The paper discusses the current role of the so-called low-cost carrier for the development of tourism industry and local economy in general, where scholars state that the dynamics of these two phenomena are inextricably linked in a bidirectional way. To this aim, the paper provides an overview of the trends of the low-cost companies in Italy, also by considering the airports network to support their diffusion, and the forecasted direction of the international traffic flows.
