What are the main factors affecting direct and indirect energy and matter use as well as environmental loading in a regional agriculture? Can these factors be removed or - at least - minimized? Is energy self-reliance a “mission impossible” at regional level? To what extent agriculture contributes to the environmental loading generated by the whole regional economy? These and other aspects are stressed in the paper, by means of joint use of energy and material flow analysis and emergy synthesis.
