In this paper, the sensitivity of the AWR1843BOOST FMCW millimeter wave (mmW) radar from Texas Instruments is investigated, with particular emphasis on vegetation targets. The proposed approach is validated through controlled laboratory experiments involving different vegetation targets, i.e. plants, characterized by different scenarios named Environ-mental Signal Canopy View (ESCV) and Environmental Signal Stem View (ESSV). Experimental results demonstrate that the AWR1843BOOST FMCW mmW radar is sensitive to the different plant and leaf orientations, water content, canopy density and visible stem or flowers in a vertical plant view scenario, whereas direct canopy view results in smoother and well-organized range profiles and is good at measuring the plant's sap flow. Measurements accomplished at the electromagnetic and remote sensing (EMRS) laboratory of the Università degli Studi di Napoli Parthenope confirm the soundness of the proposed methodologies and the sensitivity of the AWR1843BOOST FMCW mmW radar to vegetation targets.
