Fostering Sustainability-Related Soft Skills Through Experiential Learning: An Investigation of Interdisciplinary Approaches in Higher Education

Higher education institutions (HEIs) play a critical role in preparing future leaders to promote sustainable practices. Research underscores the strong link between HEIs and the cultivation of sustainability-oriented attitudes and behaviors, especially within business schools. These institutions are tasked with equipping students with key competencies, such as responsible management, stakeholder engagement, and ethical decision-making, all vital for addressing contemporary sustainability challenges. While progress has been made, questions remain about how sustainability education can effectively nurture essential soft skills like critical thinking, collaboration, and ethical reasoning. Experiential learning approaches—such as service learning, community engagement, action research, and interdisciplinary projects—have shown promise in fostering sustainability competencies. However, further exploration is needed to assess how these methods translate into practical skill development. This study focuses on an experiential learning program conducted in spring 2024, linked to SEA- EU European Universities alliances activities and centered on Circular Economy principles. Through a mixed-methods approach, including surveys and focus groups, the research examines how hands- on, interdisciplinary activities enhance students’ sustainability-related soft skills. The findings aim to guide universities in implementing similar initiatives, promoting collaborative projects and real-world problem-solving activities. This work contributes to the broader discussion on HEIs’ responsibility to prepare future leaders capable of driving sustainable change through responsible management practices.
