Air quality is a major determinant of quality of life in urban environments. However, despite the existence of numerous objective data sources, research on the subjective perception of air pollution remains limited. The prevailing ap- proach, largely based on objective indicators, can provide only a partial under- standing of environmental phenomena, as highlighted by studies by Chiarini et al. (2020; 2021). This paper introduces a map of air quality perceptions in Italy, at Provinces scale, based on a multidimensional indicator constructed using data from a purposely designed sample survey. The variables employed to build the indicator explore various aspects of air quality assessment, such as the relevance of specific pollution sources, the level of concern generated by air quality, and the perceived impact of pollution on health and overall quality of life.
