This research presents a detailed simulation and analysis of a renewable-based hydrogen production facility tailored for vehicle refuelling stations, planned for installation in Southern Italy. The system integrates a solar photovoltaic (PV) plant employing solar-tracking technology with an anion-exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyser. The hydrogen produced from renewable sources (green hydrogen) is initially stored in low-pressure tanks before undergoing compression and transfer to high-pressure storage suitable for automotive refuelling applications. The study adopted a dynamic modelling approach to evaluate the system performance across an entire year, based on local weather conditions. The percentage of green and grid-derived hydrogen (yellow hydrogen) is analysed, alongside comprehensive evaluations of energy performance, environmental impacts, and economic feasibility relative to a conventional grid-only reference system.
