Carbon dioxide is the most common and dangerous greenhouse gas (GHG) that is released into the atmosphere, and it has become one of the biggest environmental hazards. The relationship between Portland cement and carbone dioxide has been thoroughly investigated. This chapter explores the advantages and disadvantages of several “green” supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) added to concrete mixtures. The need of life cycle thinking in assessing environmental, economic, and social sustainability has been pointed out in this chapter in addition to technical specification compliance.
