It's generally accepted that "vision" and "mission" are key concepts in strategic thought, but there isn't any general agreement about the meaning of these two words. This article reviews some of the most widespread frameworks, choosing the one from Collins and Porras, and then discusses some issues on the development of effective visions and coherent missions. From the analysis emerges the centrality of the communication process, between the organization and the external environment and inside the organization itself. There is some empirical evidence about better communication of mission statements and some authors have proposed interesting frameworks related to specific kind of organizations, but there isn't a general agreement on the best way to communicate statements of mission. Probably, one interesting path to fallow is the improvement of disclosures through a system of quantitative expressions and ratios that synthetize the finalism of the firm.
