The significant attention paid to civil structural health monitoring (SHM) in the last decades due to its capacity to extend the lifespan of existing civil structures promoted the publication of several guidelines and technical standards in different Countries. They mostly provide rules and instructions for the design of SHM systems or for planning inspections and maintenance. So far, a qualification framework for SHM systems is missing, unlike other civil construction assets. Defining an appropriate qualification procedure for civil SHM systems is very challenging while desirable given the case-by-case dependency of SHM system design. The present paper discusses a scenario-based qualification approach for civil vibration-based SHM systems. In this context, an extensive and up-to-date state-of-the-art about standardization concerning civil SHM is provided. The qualification approach is described in detail afterwards and applied to a real case study confirming its potential and attractiveness in rating industrial SHM applications.
