The essay aims to provide, especially to enrich the cultural background of young legal historians, a series of useful data to enable the correct perception of ancient theology, and especially the tools by which it was able to develop and structure itself between the 1st and 5th centuries, until the establishment of the so-called Roman-Christian empire. The analysis first approaches the earliest roots of theology and then the use and meaning of certain technical expressions; following this, it deals with theological methods of study and the literary genres covered by them; again, it identifies cultural models of reference by centring attention on certain prominent figures; finally, it focuses attention on the exegetical method exercised on the biblical text.
