Port studies are a wide research field which is rich in essays and empirical investigations extensively tested by deep transformations in port systems occurred in last decades. I aim to provide an appropriate device to frame major contributions by taking up tools widely used in social sciences. In particular, major studies on port development will be compared through two synthetic models in order to better highlight their foundations. My working hypothesis is that although it is often supposed an extreme continuity in port development studies there are actually antagonistic readings.
