Purpose – This study aims to investigate the human resource management practices implemented by Italian agri-food listed companies to achieve and maintain gender equality according to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) no. 5. Design/methodology/approach – This study uses data from multiple case studies to analyze the human resource disclosure released by all Italian agri-food listed companies in their sustainability reports drawn up according to the requirements of Directive 2014/95/EU. Findings – Through the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) disclosure items released in sustainability reports, the findings showed equality and diversity performance and human resource management (HRM) practices related to the issue of gender. For Italian agri-food-listed companies, gender equality was a part of their strategic plan and was expressed in organizational culture and identity, increasing the likelihood that stakeholders would embrace this value. Moreover, the findings highlighted that all the companies focused on training as an HRM practice to promote gender equality. Originality/value – In light of the gaps between men and women in career opportunities and pay in Italy, particularly in the agri-food sector, this study was the first to analyze the initiatives implemented by organizations to achieve the goals of gender equality, in particular, SDG 5. Practical implications – The findings suggest that a critical characteristic for embracing gender equality and, in general, diversity management is to implement fair policies and practices, as well as a justice climate.
