Abstract

Museums are driving knowledge-led innovation, rediscovering the importance of using information technology and virtual environments in order to enhance knowledge production on cultural heritage by strengthening audience involvement and user participation, enabling the role of museum professionals as user-centred mediators, adopting a knowledge-led vision to digital technology and virtual museum-driven innovation within social and cultural ecosystems. As meeting places and knowledge contact zones, museums are moving in a reality constructed by objects as agents and catalysers of knowledge production, becoming digital to display the knowledge created between museum staff and users as learners and knowers by engaging intentionally with digital objects. As knowledge-led organisations, museums contribute to sharing authority on cultural heritage knowledge, engaging audience and enabling user participation, driving knowledge-led innovation, strengthening technology, organisation and human resources, and engaging the users as co producers of cultural knowledge. Museums drive social and professional innovation, interacting with audiences, following an organisation-driven view to knowledge-led innovation
