Digital technology is transforming the credit industry in two ways. First, by changing the ways of administering credit in the traditional banking sectors through the adoption of big data storages, machine learning or robo-advisers. Second, through the creation of an alternative intermediation sector, which includes peer to peer lending, crowd-funding, equity funding and the alike, which is posing threats to the traditional banking sectors by competing with it. In this chapter we examine the institutional features, the growth prospects and discuss the externalities linked to digital transformation.

Abstract

Digital technology is transforming the credit industry in two ways. First, by changing the ways of administering credit in the traditional banking sectors through the adoption of big data storages, machine learning or robo-advisers. Second, through the creation of an alternative intermediation sector, which includes peer to peer lending, crowd-funding, equity funding and the alike, which is posing threats to the traditional banking sectors by competing with it. In this chapter we examine the institutional features, the growth prospects and discuss the externalities linked to digital transformation.
