A wide experimental program carried out by the authors on tuff masonry walls under diagonal compression and retrofitted by means of several innovative composite grids with inorganic matrices is briefly summarized. The goal of present study is, indeed, the simulation of some of these experimental results by means of a detailed two-dimensional FE model developed for both the unstrengthened and retrofitted masonry walls using the micro-modelling technique. According to such an approach for both tuff units and mortar joints, individually described in the model, the non-linear behavior was described through a smeared cracking method. The FE model has been validated on the basis of comparisons with the experimental results and the effect of the retrofit system on both stiffness and strength of the wall has been investigated.
