The chapter deals with the geomorphological character of Mt. Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei (Phlegrean Fields) volcanoes and their morphoevolution resulting from eruptive history. They are among the best known active volcanoes in the world because their recent history is accurately documented in historical and archaeological sources since the Roman period. They represent a condition of high risk for the dense population that inhabits them and the surrounding areas, as in the case of the Campi Flegrei volcanic area.

Abstract

The chapter deals with the geomorphological character of Mt. Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei (Phlegrean Fields) volcanoes and their morphoevolution resulting from eruptive history. They are among the best known active volcanoes in the world because their recent history is accurately documented in historical and archaeological sources since the Roman period. They represent a condition of high risk for the dense population that inhabits them and the surrounding areas, as in the case of the Campi Flegrei volcanic area.
