The aim of this paper is to investigate the quality of doctoral education in Italy in the twofold perspective of formal relevance of Ph.D. qualification in the labour market and substantial relevance of skills acquired for different occupations inside and outside university. Once that the main determinants of overeducation and overskilling among Italian doctorate holders have been sketched, extended versions of log-earnings equations are estimated in order to assess the role played by formal education and skills mismatches in terms of wage penalty. The different patterns of overeducation and overskilling, which are sketched for mismatched Ph.D. recipients working inside and outside academe, lead to different degrees of severity of pay penalty between these two groups.
