This paper deals with the elastic buckling of longitudinally stiffened panels, for which overall and local plate buckling are two distinct failure modes. As for ship structures it is generally preferred that local buckling occurs firstly, it is necessary to define the minimum scantling of stiffeners that permits to prevent overall buckling from occurring before local plate buckling. In the following a systematic buckling analysis of one-bay stiffened panels under uniaxial compression is presented, taking into account both failure modes, and the convergence of solution, in terms of critical flexural rigidities of longitudinal stiffeners, is investigated. An improved expression is derived to identify the “crossover” panels, for which local and overall buckling stresses are almost the same, and subsenquently it is compared with those ones proposed by Klitchieff (1951), Hughes & al. (2004) and with the relevant results obtained by some FE eigenvalue buckling analyses.

Abstract
(2004) and with the relevant results obtained by some FE eigenvalue buckling analyses.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
