Abstract

In the smart cities, as communities of the future and ideal places for work and life, city councils as democratic legislatures are becoming aware in using Internet technologies (IT) to support citizens engagement in the public life restoring the relationship of confidence. Cities are moving to an e-government paradigm. IT may enhance local governance leading to transparent and accountable legislatures and enable citizen participation in the policy process. Legislatures must be given central focus in debates about the changing nature of democracy in the information age. Websites as main public virtual face of legislature permit to communicate with citizens and engage more effectively them in the political process providing greater information and access to documents and acts. City Councils may design their websites conforming to guidelines for parliamentary websites seeking legiti-macy as open and accountable institutions enhancing local governance.
