The present study reviews the birth modes of biotechnological firms in Italy. The development of the biotechnological industry in Italy is in an early stage of development which renders it susceptible to changes capable of improving productivity. The birth modes of thirteen Italian biotechnological firms were investigated using case studies. Three different birth modes were individuated and described.
