Consumer demand for higher quality foods has beeen increasing especially in high income countries, based on consumers' increased knowledge about links between diet and health; awareness of quality characteristics and access to information about new production and processing technologies. Labelling is a very important tool to pass information about product attributes on to consumers. According to this, a review of the various functions of labelling is presented in this article. Current information levels on food labels are examined relating to food labelling regulations and firms' voluntary labelling decision. A particular focus is given to issues about country origin labelling.
